Wood Hollow Vest, aka the Best Thing I've Ever Made

Wood Hollow vest by Through the Loops
I know I tend to veer towards the hyperbolic about most things (along with sneering contempt it's my favorite mode of expression), but I am here to tell you that I have just completed test knitting the best thing I've ever made, courtesy of Kirsten Kapur of Through the Loops fame. Wood Hollow Vest! Wood Hollow Vest! Shout it from the mountain tops--it's a real honey of a pattern that deserves your immediate attention!

The Specs
Pattern: Wood Hollow Vest by Kirsten Kapur of Through the Loops
Yarn: Cascade 220, 4.5 skeins of #9564, 'Birch Heather'.
Size: 44
Needles: size 6 and 7 circs
Time: Cast on Christmas Day while starting into the void and my in-laws in NJ, worked on it on and off while doing other things, and finished last night.
Mods: Excuse me? What is this 'modifications' thing of which you speak? ETA: there is one unintentional mod--I muffed up the cable panel on the front. But hey--only God is perfect, etc.

There is so much to love about this pattern. One thing that I so appreciate as Chesty McChesterton is that the pattern comes in sizes 32-54 in a way that actually works, meaning that it's not like those patterns that work perfectly at the smaller sizes but haven't been properly thought out at the larger end. The cables are perfectly proportional in all sizes.

This is the ultimate Cascade 220 project as the yarn makes the stitches pop to perfection. I'm sure that right now most of you even have enough in your stashes to do this pattern. This particular color is also quite appealing as well as it's a tad odd. I first saw it chez Babs as she's using it for a vest that SHE NEEDS TO FINISH. Ahem. To me it just screams 'Old English Furniture polish', which in my world is a supreme accolade. It also reminds me of the shag carpeting the Silverman twins had in their basement as well as the cock-a-poo Ginger our family had in the 80s. All good associations!

There's a new Wood Hollow KAL on Ravelry if you fancy doing this pattern with the real time, live blogging assistance that only a RavKal can provide. I also think that this would be the perfect Ravelympics pattern as it would hold your interest and is totally doable in the time frame of the event. Me? I'm a moron and am trying the Autumn Rose Pullover because apparently 'going down in flames' is how I plan on celebrating the Winter Games.

From the department of shameless family promotion, because it's what we do: You might have heard about a little device announced yesterday with a regrettable name? Well guess what--my brother CALLED IT over four years ago as a writer at MadTv:

Okay... that is a vest I must knit. I'm not even the biggest fan of cables on items beyond hats/gloves/etc... but I am in love with that vest.

Yeah... what the heck is with the name "iPad"? Really? I understand the whole empire built on "i___" but wow.

Love MadTV for this...

Fantastic vest - it is beautiful. Apple really had a winner with that name...

I just bought the vest pattern. I'm making the EZ Green Sweater for the Ravelympics, but this vest will be the next on my list.

Your brother can see the future!

Best. post. ever.

I love the vest, and it's so heartening to hear when pattern's really are great for the not-so-willowy knitter. I, too, belong to the Chesty McChesterton/Hooty McBoob camp.

And your brother's sketch? Hilarious!!!

BTW,I applaud you for tackling Autumn Rose. I'm wussing out and tackling Tea Leaves.

a. The vest is gorgeous. I downloaded the pattern, then felt uneasy that it might be too tight for me, a not-thin gal. But you have restored my faith.

b. Your brother is a genius and it just took time for Apple to fall into the trap.

And you rocked the vest - and yes, a great use for Cascade 220!

o.m.g. the video rocks! I think Apple was paying attention. There is probably an "app for that" - ack! Genious.

Speaking of genious - deserving a second omg in this pos - that vest - breathtaking. Kirsten did it again! She is an endless well of goodies! Nice job making it your own, I love the colorway you chose! Bra-VO!

So much talent in one family. Really not fair. Love the vest; the color is gorgeous on you! And you know the skit is funny when the man of the house asks if I can send him the link to a knitting blog.

The Autumn Rose Pullover?! I dare you to try to finish it in two weeks. I double dog dare you even. I bet it couldn't be done even a person had the time to knit 8 hours a day for that time period. You are totally crazy. I'm doing a vest.

way to go, bro!

LOVING that vest. (and that you paired it with that grey t) the cables totally pop and out of cascade, the price is right. i totally dig that color.... shag carpet for sure! (have you been to natural stitches? you should SEE their wall of cascade 220 and priced less than our fave competitor!)

autumn rose looks amazing.

That vest is impressive. I can't believe you did it in about a month. Very texture-ey and yummy!

I do like that color. Back in the day, we called it "Harvest Gold." It looks much better in Cascade 220 than it did as a refrigerator!

As usual, you have me laughing this morning...thanks!!

The vest is amazing as are all of TTL patterns...and this yellow is really the only yellow I like...deep and golden. Beautiful!

The vest is lovely! Before I go rifle through stash in search of 4.5 skeins of Cascade...gotta say, I'll be spreading the word about the 'original ipad'. All my friends will want one!
