Back in the car I was able to finish my two easy projects. Both are cowls based on the Gloria cowl, but would be renamed later by their recipient. Here they are in their pre-gifted state:
I must say one of the joys of the cowl is that you really get to see what various fingering/dk yarns look like knitted up in something other than a sock. The result here was pure love, both on the part of the knitter and the recipient, who later redubbed these 'snoods' rather than cowls. This guy has a bit of a flare for the absurd and a gift for language, so I wasn't going to argue. 'Snood' is what happens when you make a scarf that looks like a hood with an extra 'n' thrown in for alitteration.
The Specs:
Pattern: Based on the Gloria Cowl
Yarn: Lucy Neatby Celestial Bluefaced DK in Bottle (the greenish one) and Hand Maiden Casbah Sock (no color given). Both are fabulous, for very different reasons. The former for the interesting, deep color variations within one skein and the latter for its unbelievable softness.
Needles: Size 9 and 8, respectively
Mods: Both have a garter stitch border rather than the seed stitch called for in the pattern. In retrospect I would have made this much longer as there is a bit of the dreaded curling, but it's not that big of a deal, right?

Ummmm, yeah, maybe a wee bit of over sharing there. ;) But those "snoods" are so gorgeous, it's worth reading anything you want to tell us about!!!
Dude! Seriously! He's the singer from R.E.M., right? Can't fool me! Love the snoods. The edge of the red one almost has a braided effect. I think the fact that they curl adds to the charm.
That "bathroom" story is priceless.
Is that Michael Stipe????
The 'snoods' came out beautiful!.. Love the EBM story... You've caught yourself a GEM!
Okay, I'm glad that some other people are thinking the same thing as me, which is, Is that Michael Stipe?! If so, WOWWW!!!!!!!!
Tell us more before we explode with jealousy!!!!
You know, Julie Frick has been calling for the advent of the mowl--I think she demanded that Jared make one--but I think she need wait no longer. This right here is trendsetting.
are you somehow related to michael stipe!? because if i didn't love you before, i am head over heels now. i've had a crush on him since high school. omg omg omg.
Love the cowls! :)
Is that Michael Stipe?! Seriously!
Well, if Michael Stipe will wear a cowl, then I guess I can, too!
Well, they look fabulous and now I am feeling inspired to pick up my Gloria cowl and finish it!
Is that Michael Stipe? It has to be! Awesome! Michael Stipe and crapping in the grass by the side of the highway all in one post. I can't ask for more.
I made me a Gloria cowl too. In my family, EBM strikes in certain stores: usually the A&P and Home Goods. For long car trips, we have a designated "pee bucket" but haven't had to crap roadside yet.
Is your snood-wearer English? We call them snoods here.
Dude, is that who I think it is?!?
I'm a giddy teenager over here. How do you know Michael Stipe??? He looks fab in the snoods, btw.
Okay, now *I* want to know if that's Michael Stipe...
Lovely snoods! Er, I mean, very macho manly snoods!
LOVE the snoods! Much nicer than the yucky snoods I had to wear in horse shows. Hope the trip home wasn't as eventful (for the younger ones sakes of course!!)
I can relate to the ebm. We call it a bathroom emergency. I once dated a guy who had a similar experience, pulled over, and ran around the side of a large building just off the road, where he...uh...took care of things. Only to look behind himself and discover that his backside was mere inches from the large picture window of a hotel dining room full of patrons, all watching in horror.
I am totally freeking out over here. YOU KNOW MICHAEL FREEKIN' STIPE?!?!? THE GOD HIMSELF?!?!? *swoons*
OMG, your emb story… sounds horrifying, but, shit happens eh!
Nice cowls. Love the rich colors!
um, OK, I'm sure you know what I'm going to ask before I even ask but, is that Michael Stipe? It's gotta be!
You know, it's not just any blogger that can drop a poop story and Michael Stipe into the same post. I'm glad you survived the incident. The employees of every gas station between my home and work (all 2 of them) know me because my intestinal flareups often happen on the way to work. (TMI?) Love the snoods.
Who knew tmi about ebm's would be so entertaining? Man, if your kids where embarrassed before, I can only imagine how mortified they are now that you've given your poop-attack a play-by-play on the intertubes! Hilarious!
Knowing that somewhere out there, my teen-dream is fondling my favouritest yarn in whole wide world makes me stoopidly happy. Shiny happy-happy, in fact.
Hilarious story, and great Snoods! Your recipient looks quite pleased.
(Was that nonchalant sounding enough? WOW.)
I am thinking Michael Stipe too - hmmm. The cowls, er snoods are fabulous! I bet they are so soft. And I did giggle at the ebm - what a spectacle:)
OMG that story was too funny and definately bring back childhood memories *LAUGH*
The snoods are great too!
Uh, is that R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe?! No way! I usually lurk, but I had to come out of hiding for this. Beautiful cowls.
Hee hee. Love those "snoods" :) You are totally making me want to make a bunch!
knittymuggins
Very cool!!
The snoods are just as awesome as the recipient. Nice!
I'm also a lurker. I really enjoy your blog.
Ok, is that Michael Stipe??? It really, really looks like him if not.
And yeah, since we're on TMI - on the "ebm" I've been lucky enough not to ever get one of those in the car. But I do get them, probably a couple times a week at least. Usually if I have to "go" I really HAVE to go. I don't understand these people who sit around for long periods of time in the bathroom, drinking coffee, reading magazines, generally hanging out in there (MEN, in my experience - maybe they need more fiber in their diet?) I do it and get out!
Ha! I have learned to finish my coffee before reading your posts. Otherwise there is a very real threat that it will be spit across the room. You do paint quite a picture with your stories!
The Snoods look fabulous on Michael Snipe. (Have you ever played the game Snood BTW? Addicting - had to delete it from the computer when my daughter's (then) 3rd grade teacher mentioned that she told him that mom didn't sign her agenda because she was playing computer games all night.)
Crap. Typo. Stipe. Must've been all of the Snood talk.
michael snipe. snoods. ebm. rem.
it's all just too much.
he looks pretty darn cute in your snoods.
Holy EBM!
That absolutely makes my night!
If I could travel back in time and tell this to my high-school self, I'm sure I would be EBM-ing my pants and calculating official degrees of separation.
That definitely has to be Michael Stipe!!! What a cutie pie!
EBM.... we call that Ed in my family... code name for Explosive diarrhea. My kids have been humiliated many times. They tell me that's why they are in therapy!
Is that really him? How cool!
Awesome snoods!
Dude is that??? Really!? That's completely awesome. As are the snoods.
And an overshare once in a while keeps the blog interesting, right?
It's cracking me up- how people are reacting to the possibility of you knitting for Michael Stipe... I recognize that face from pics of a hat a while back- recipient of a Koolhaas as well? Maybe... or something like that... doesn't matter...
Fun snoods, they look scrumptious!
Happy knitting-
ali
Hehe, I couldn't stand it- had to go searchin. It was a post in January- and I remembered rightly, a Koolhaas. Then I had to find a fairly recent picture of the man in question... and, how interesting. Someday the story of how you two know each other will have to come out...
I haven't hung with anyone famous for quite some time, but used to enjoy some handy connections quite frequently- you know, friends who worked at First Avenue, box office managers for small theaters who know other box office managers for bigger theaters... Recently saw James Galway for free (gotta love having connections!) though, his musical talent, genius though it may be, lies in a very different genre!
Anyhoo- fun stuff, and bummer about that ebm...
You just told us the EBM story so we'd feel sorry for you and not consumed with jealousy for you and your indie darling knit recipient.
So transparent....
BTW, nice snood dude! The model is easy on the eyes, as well.
wonderful guy you got there! I've told Mike too many times to pull over with the camper. My stomach doesn't like fast food all that much!
Those snoods are fantastic. Really they are. Fantastic rich colors!
That is a really funny bathroom story. Thanks for sharing every little detail.
I've added you to my blogroll, your knitting is really amazing.
