Clap-o-wha??

Clapotis in Brooks Farm Duet
I can well understand why there is a Second Wave Clapotis kal as this pattern deserves one more round of attention from a brand new batch of knitters. It was an immensely satisfying pattern to knit as it is that happy combination of engaging enough to hold your interest yet completely memorizable. Of course by the end you are staring into the void and screaming 'Enough already!', but what pattern doesn't chew you up and spit you out with tedium when all is said and done?

The Specs:
Pattern: Clapotis, you know where to find it
Yarn: Brooks Farm Duet, a little less than one skein
Needles: size 7

Clapotis in Brooks Farm Duet
Not to go all French teacher or anything, but since we've recently been clearing up some pronunciation misunderstandings, let's get another one out of the way. Despite what you might have heard from the knitters of Nascar, PA., Clapotis does not have an 'Otis' on the end of it . No, that's the loveable drunk from Mayberry . It's Clap-o-tee, rhymes with 'pee'. I am becoming more persnickety as I get older, I must say. Another sign that I am getting older? Tween thing was invited to her first boy-girl party. I am sure even using the expression 'boy-girl party' makes me seem very Jan and Marcia and hence necessarily middle-aged, but there you have it.

I am very excited because this weekend I am off to Aspen for a work-related event. Three cheers for feeding at the corporate trough! This means lots of airplane knitting on the DRMC's Cobblestone as well as some sock action. Next up is the Uptown Boot Socks pattern from Favorite Socks . I am bringing along my freshly-wound ball of Tess (pictured below) in order to make some progress on it.
Tess Baby and Sock yarn

Another thing I'm bringing along: Tween thing's ipod, which I have secretly emptied of her treacly, crappy music and instead loaded with my better, less shitty music. In heavy rotation: the new Radiohead album which I command you all to download from their site immediately. It will accomplish the dual purpose of bringing you great joy and sticking it to the man because you're buying it directly from the band!

  1. I think I will go download the new Radiohead album, even though my son already did. It'll be like sticking it to the man twice.

Have a great time on your trip and with all of that knitting time.

Clap-Otis is lovey. That is one iconic pattern that I have yet to knit. I should do a little stash diving. There must be something in these mounds of yarn that would work!

  2. Absolutely gorgeous! How many skeins of Duet, and which colorway is that? I find the colors on the Brooks Farm website very difficult to discern.

One of the low points in Mpls. local news occurred when a newscaster talked about a great movie called Pole-ock. Yeah, it was about the artist Jackson Pollock. Sigh...

  3. Treacly and crappy, hehe...some days it's worth coming here for the adjectives alone :) LOVE the Clapotis, what a great colorway. Enjoy your business trip (ook, it is courtesy of the man, isn't it?)

  4. Your Clapotis looks great! I knit one ages ago but might make another soon...

I also got the new Radiohead album. Not sure if I like it yet but I love the fact that they're doing it on their own!

  5. I love it. I am definately feeling inspired to knit a Clapotis of my own! How many skeins of Duet did you use?

  6. Very lovely Clap :) I cracked up the first time I heard someone pronounce it Clap-Otis. Sometimes being a snobby french person is fun!

  10. Merci for the little lesson on how to pronounce Clapotis. For francophones like me, "Clap-Otis" sounds like nails on a blackboard. Same with "Toor Day France". But then again, I'm sure I make my own "faux pas" when I mispronounce Spanish or Italian words for instance.

And thanks for reminding me about the Radiohead album. I've been meaning to download it since it was posted and keep forgetting. I'm gonna do it right now. It'll keep the ladies rocking all the way to Rhinebeck.

  14. wow, i am so glad i found your blog. i just love your posts--i laugh out loud at some point during every one! and to think that your photos have gotten me feeling more positive about clapotis. i've been very uninspired by it since it was published, and yet seeing your lovely modeling photos makes me *almost* want to make it. how did you do that??

  15. Love the clappy. Great colorway! I still have not knit that pattern- I ALMOST did during the first wave but never quite got to it...

Oh and the way Radiohead is handling their album is so refreshing - I hope more bands start to do this. I think they will...

    Have fun in Aspen!

  16. Ohhh, a red Clapotis! I love it.

  17. Otis! From Mayberry! I loved him! And since you brought up Jan and Marcia, have you heard about Marcia's new tell-all book? Sounds like they weren't just going to boy-girl parties. Those kooky Bradys!

Love the Clapotis. I think red is my new/old favorite color lately. I hope you have a great time in Aspen this weekend.

  18. Your Clapotis looks so soft! I so wish I had a corporate trough. I feel guilty turning in receipts for a $10 lunch at a meeting. Well, not guilty enough not to do it. I'm going to go download Radiohead and pretend that I'm "with it."

  19. Speaking of Marcia and Jan.... I think you should mélange your Clapotis with a Very Brady poncho! Rainbow colors please!

  20. Beautiful Clap-o-tee! And I'm so glad you cleared that up!

  21. I really may end up knitting the clapotis after all. Yours looks great.

Oooh, and thanks for reminding me about the Radiohead album.

  22. Yay! Clapotis! It's beautiful. I wish it would get cool enough so that I could actually use mine for more than five minutes at a time.

  23. This is truly beautiful I love your wool choice.

  24. I'm not a big fan of the Clap, but yours is gorgeous! That color is just lovely and works well with the pattern.

Aspen for work? I want your job!

  25. I broke out my Clapotis a few days ago. A classic knit! Yours looks tres jolie. I think I'll go put on my Clap-Otis, go out to a restaurant and order me a Quaysa-Dilla. Have a great time in Aspen!

  26. and here I was all this time thinking that Otis had the clap. And that Kafe Fleeceit was a serious guy... you learn the darnest things on this enter net.

  29. A second wave and I still haven't knit it! doesn't mean that I don't love it though ;) this one looks great!

  30. Beautiful! I *love* that color! And thanks for clarifying the pronunciation of "Clapotis". I didn't go so far as to massacre it with "Otis", but I was saying something like "Cla-poddis" in my head so I have to admit I was close. It irks me to mispronunicate things so I'm glad you were feeling "persnickety" and set me straight :) Have fun on your trip!!

  31. At the risk of publicly declaring my complete obliviousness and forever being relegated to the misfits' table in the cafeteria, what the heck is Clapotis supposed to be? I've seen a thousand of them, and I just can't figure it out. Is it a shawl? A scarf? A doll hammock? What?

  32. Add me to the list of the few "haven't knit the Clap"-ers. Something about dropping all those ladders--a little intimidating. Yours turned out just gorgeous. Maybe I need to get up the courage...

  33. I love you Clapotis! (teeeee) *grin* and thanks for the clarification of the pronunciation :) I still haven't made mine! I had some yarn dyed especially for it, but just never got around to starting it! And with Christmas now around the corner I am knitting and crocheting like mad to get gifts completed since my ass is broke and my stash is over-flowing! *laugh*

    Have fun on your trip!

  34. Beautiful! Love the Clapotis. Also, I love the phrase "boy-girl party". It makes me a little nostalgic.

  35. Holy clap (couldn't resist, sorry). It looks lovely - way better than mine, which has been relegated to the second from the bottom of the knitting pile. Glad to hear I've been pronouncing it correctly all this time :)

    Love me some Radiohead.

  36. Maybe to clear up any pronunciation problems, we knitters should refer to the Clapotis as "The Clap." But really, your clap is lovely. I've been thinking of making one for my mom, but I was worried it would take too long. You seem to have finished yours very quickly!

  37. Clap On, Clap Off. I'm a fan of the Clapper. Thank you for correcting the pronunciation of said frenchie poo garment. And..... the new Radiohead album is sooooooo good. I can't believe I gave them 5 pounds for it, tho. I should have given them what I pay for a used cd... which is about $7. I got all confused with the pound versus the euro. And they had that lovely converter link RIGHT THERE.

    Kisses....

  38. Curiosity always getting the better of me, what did you decide to pay for your Radiohead download?

  39. Your Clap looks great! I LOVE the Brooks Farm yarn and can't wait to p/u some more from them in February. Maybe this time I'll get the Duet instead of the FourPlay ... then again, maybe I'll just get both!

  40. I have the yarn, I have the pattern, I have every intention of making a clapotis. I just haven't done it Yet. Yours is gorgeous!! Love the colour. I've picked a foggy sea green for mine, now if I can just get off my butt ;-D.

  43. I was in Kathy's Kreations a couple weeks ago, and I had to give them a lesson on how to pronounce Clapotis. I was positively horrified at the way the woman there pronounced it (and she seemed genuinely confounded at how I knew that I was correct) - it was so bad that I initially did not even know what she was talking about!
