Do fries go with that shake...?

Drive-Thru in Jo Sharp Aran Silktweed
The Drive-Thru. Yes, me and my thighs are well acquainted with the modern day convenience of being able to buy french fries or doughnuts in New England without the shame and deterrent of having to be seen walking across the parking lot to do so. But did you know the Drive-Thru is also a sweater? It lives up to its name as it is a convenient, speedy knit. The recipient i.e. Peeper-Lou is ecstatic--why she even tore herself away from the most hideous dreck that that Disney Channel has ever polluted our airwaves with to try it on with enthusiasm. She was pleased because the photo shoot gave her the opportunity to show off her 'side bangs', a concept that didn't exist back in 70s. No, those in-between bangs were normally a sign that your were trying to
grow out your bangs, and were never a goal in themselves, but I digress...

Disclaimer: No yarn was purchased in the making of this sweater. I am pleased to report that this sweater was knit 100% from stash. I feel like I deserve some sort of medal for that. Sad.

The Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed is just about the most heavenly yarn out there, a luscious combo of merino, silk and cashmere, all wrapped together in a blanket of tweediness...the colors are also quite enticing. Who could resist a color way named 'vermouth'? Not this Whiskypalian...

The pattern is another Wendy Bernard classic. I seem to have knit quite a few of her patterns, and I must say that they are all easy to follow yet interesting enough to be appealing. The only modifications I made were to lengthen the sleeves about 1.5 ins and go a little free style with the yoke. I try to live by the James Brown credo 'give it up or turn it loose', so I turned it loose.

Tween Thing emerged from her Fruits Basket-ipod-teen vogue-gingerbread latte drill long enough to make a knitting request as well. She was very close to wanting the Somewhat Cowl, which in her case we'd have to call the Somewhat (s)Cowl, but I dodged a major bullet and won't be knitting a sweater on size 5 needles after all. Instead Her Highness has deigned to ask for Juliet, and I, her humble stitching underling, am only too happy to oblige. Below you see the beginnings of it in Lamb's Pride Bulky. Shhh.....Don't tell her that the word 'bulky' is in the name of the yarn, she'll never wear it!

  2. Um, I think tween thing lives here. Are you sure you have the right daughter?

Drive Thru & Peeper-lou are very, very fabulous! Those big brown eyes and the tweedy yarn are just the combo!

I think we do need to design a medal for those who manage a project of this size straight from the stash! Bravo!

  3. Peeper-lou is *adorable* (and so is the sweater)! Hee hee. I know just what you mean. I am currently knitting something solely from stash and I feel as if I deserve something extra special for *not* purchasing yarn for a project! Maybe more yarn? Tween Thing will love her Juliet I'm sure. Reminds me.... it's about time to finish mine!

  4. I'll agree that the Jo Sharp Silkroad tweed is divine! I'm a bit jealous that Pepper-lou has a whole sweater of it's yummy soft goodness. I have a sweater's worth of this deep forest green color in my stash that is just BEGGING to be knit up!

  5. Ugh, I just reread and saw my glaring gramatical error. Sorry.

  6. Oh, so cute! And yes, you totally deserve kudos for knitting any sweater (even a kid's size) from stash.

And, you have kids who make knitting REQUESTS. How awesome is that??

  7. What a cutie Peeper-lou is - especially in that fantastic sweater!

Stash knitting, especially for a sweater, definitely deserves an award. Go buy some more yarn. hehehehehe...

  8. Thanks for several morning laughs! It's funny how hearing other people joke about their kids makes it easier to be a mother. At least for me. (Erma Bombeck once got a letter from a mom in prison who said, "If I'd known people could laugh about this sort of thing, I wouldn't be here, and my son would be alive." Horrifying. But I digress.)

LOVE that sweater! Beautiful colors, and Peeper-lou is adorable. It's a shame she'll be outgrowing it. Do you save your kidknits after they're outgrown?

  9. I have a "Tween Thing" here, too. Except she's just seven. *headdesk* We had a giant battle last summer over the necessity of a life-jacket when floating down a river -- apparently, it made her look "too puffy". :P

The Drive-Thru looks gorgeous in tweed!!!

  10. I love the colors of your Drive-Thru, isn't it amazing what you can find in your stash if you try. I have wanted to make this sweater for my niece, maybe one day I will.

  11. Love the sweater. Love the side bangs on your very cute model. Love the yarn!! I made the Juliet pattern for myself. Very fast, easy and cute. Have fun.

  12. What is it about silk blended with wool in a tweedy yarn that is so yummy? I've noticed the same kind of thing in Silky Wool. You definately need an I-Knit-It-From-Stash medal. I'm going to go make you one...

  13. I just love your version of this sweater. It reminds me, for some reason, of a watermelon. I just love it for all of its tweedy goodness. How have I had this pattern (and the yarn) for so long and not yet made it? No idea! Your model is just precious.

  14. Aw, it's cuter than cute!

  15. Great sweater - I wish they made an Adult Drive-Thru (and no, I don't mean you pull your car up and get porn - get your mind out of the gutter!!). :) You've got the best model too!!

  16. Love your Drive-thru, it came out great :) Can't wait to see Juliet - that is another very cute pattern. All my boys want lately are hats (and, frankly, I guess I'd be a bit concerned it they wanted a Juliet) so I will have to experience the cuteness of girl knits vicariously...

  17. I love your Drive-thru. It is beautiful! I think I know what I'm adding to my queue today!
Your story about the side-bangs cracked me up. One of my daughters is also the proud owner of side-bangs and the perfect part to go with them. I think side-bangs are a science, there must be some magic formula that makes them slash across one's forehead in the perfect manner. Mine won't leave the house until that is achieved. My new excuse on being late is to blame it on the side-bangs.

  18. I'm struck by a sudden compelling desire to make a yolked sweater. Wow - that came on quick!

  19. I'd say it's a good thing that Peeper-lou is considerably smaller than I, or she might be in danger of having her new garment sweater-napped. I just adore the colors and that lovely rustic look of the tweed. She's a very lucky girl and I hope she shows her appreciation by wearing that sweater as often as possible!

And kudos to you and using nothing but stash yarn! I wish I had something as lovely as that to knit up in my stash.

  20. Dang. That's a great looking sweater. She looks like she's all ready for her turn on the catwalk.

  21. It turned out great! I love the tweedy look.

And yes, Zach & Cody have been around for just a bit too long now. I refuse to have it on if I'm nearby anymore.

  22. Lucky girl! The sweater looks great on her. Never tried that yarn, it sounds (and looks) very lovely.

  23. Love the Drive-Thru! I despise Suite Life and DeGrassi is even worse. Juliet is a good choice for Tween Thing. It's so cute. It looks like a sweater that Lola would wear on Zoey 101. Mums the word about the Lambs Pride "Bulky."

  24. Your Drive-Thru is fabulous and the model is pretty cute too! I'm off to get the pattern...

  25. Cute! Love the colors! Looks like she has a little extra room so she might get to wear it for more than a nanosecond too. :)

  26. Man you've got some adorable spawn. Peeper-Lou's working the side-bangs with a lot more success than I am--must be the big brown eyes. And the awesome sweater, natch.
Juliet defeated me, I hope you have better luck!

  27. I, too, am suddonly struck by the urge to knit a yolked sweater! Beautiful work - and you had all of that yummy in your stash? You have some very lucky daughters.

  28. Oh wow! The sweater is fantastic!!! Love it. What a lucky lil' girl.

  29. Love the sweater - your daughter is super cute! LOL at the side bangs - that's a new one to me too. I'm thinking of maybe making a Drive Thru for myself one of these days. I'm not that much bigger (in the chest) than a pre-teen girl, lOL.

  30. It is perfect and Peeper-Lou the perfect model with her gorgeous bangs! I have to try this sweater! And can't wait to see the Juliet, it is a great little pattern too!

  31. hot damn, that is cute! i love the tweed in those bright colors.

i'm cracking up over that "side bangs" business. i have those too, just not on purpose! :)

  32. I want that sweater for me! me! me! Is the Silkroad Aran Tweed not the dreamiest? And the color combo is fab.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Tell Peeper-Lou she's hot! :)
And I'm glad you love the Aussie yarn [we call it wool down here.]

it is going to be beautiful in that blue. very spring like. (as in seasons) :)

  35. You crack me up.

That's a great sweater, and yes, you do deserve a medal for knitting from stash! It's always good when the kid tears herself away from Disney channel to try something on.

Juliet is very prety. I like the color you chose.

  36. So adorable! You deserve a medal, but wouldn't more yarn to replenish your stash be better?

  37. I love McDonald's and Dunkin, drive thru or not! I also love your sweater, and I hope your daughter appreciates it too.

  38. I think it's a good thing there's no drive-thru yarn stores, though somehow I don't think the line would move very fast.

The sweater is just stunning, and all stash! The colors work just perfectly together. I'm itching for some yoke love myself.

  39. I love Drive-Thru! The concept and the sweater. So much tweedy goodness. And all from stash! Impressive.

  40. That is fantastic! Kudos on the stash dive. And let me just say: side bangs or mall claw, which picture would you be less embarrassed by?
