Farm Show Hostility and Madeline Tosh therapy
I don't do well with defeat. I tend to nurse petty grievances and private hurts much longer than is necessary or healthy. I have a mean streak, and am prone to bitterness. I'm sure there is a Morrissey song that expresses the resentment I feel right now, I just can't think of what it is. My lovely Shedir and FBS brought home white ribbons. Whatever.
Third place. Seriously. Now they're just toying with me. I am not going to say one bad thing about the lovely person who won every ribbon in sight as predicted. My brother told me that I should do like those nutty Intelligent Design people who get on school boards in order to change the whole curriculum to their twisted advantage. Maybe I should somehow wheedle my way into being a judge next year?
Well, the people have spoken, and I will be spending the day redoing the Twisted Flower sock. In the end, this pattern needs a plain Jane yarn to showcase its strengths, and I will be saving that Fleece Artist for a more vanilla pattern. Thank you for all your straight talk.
Luckily yesterday I received some yarny goodness in the mail that is partially taking away the Farm Show grief. Thank you, Madeline Tosh, for providing a yarn salve for this hostile, wounded knitter. Above you see Kale and Lettuce Leaf. Their charms were too much for me to resist. I predict that Madeline Tosh will be the new Wollmeise: mark my words and get in on the ground floor now!
I'm quite sure it was rigged from the get-go. You didn't have a chance. But, remember, like the award shows, it's not whether you win or lose, it's about *who* you're wearing.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing your twisted flower socks. I found that pattern to be so much fun, although my pictures never did the socks justice.
Don't let it harsh your mellow. You KNOW your entries kicked ass and so does everyone in blogland. You're my enabler of the day as it is inevitable that I'm going to break down & order some Madeline Tosh!
ReplyDeleteTwisted Flower sock pattern + MadTosh yarn = perfection. Third shmird, we all know who the boss is.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about the contest, but that yarn is quite the salve! Kale especially is just perfect. (Kind of makes me want to get some and cook them up, actually.)
ReplyDeleteErm. Cook *it* up.
ReplyDeleteDear Heather,
ReplyDelete"What you said was sad, but then all the rejection you've had, to pretend to be happy could only be idiocy"
But take heart, it sounds like "belligerent ghouls run Hollidaysburg farm show, spineless bastards all"
It's certainly NOT because "you just haven't earned it yet baby!"
Just tell those judges "shut your mouth, how can you say, I go about things the wrong way"
The message for next year?: "Please, please, please let me get what I want"
After all you're "only human and you need to be loved, just like everybody else does"
"Heather take a, Heather take a bow. Come out and find the bloggers you love and who love you". They'll tell you how great you really are.
Sincerely,
Morrissey
don't worry about the contest - you obvsiously have the kudos of the blogsphere, and we all know thats much more important.
ReplyDeletedon't worry about my comment the other day about foot sizing - I'm winging it and hope it'll be ok, its not like the pattern I'm doing is especially tight (76 sts circ in a pretty firm 32st/4"gauge sound ok to you?) I'm just, personally, fussy about socks fitting perfectly.
Hi SSS pal! I sent my foot measurements on but maybe they didn't forwarded. That's ok, that gauge sounds perfect--so excited, thanks!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not a defeat! You were robbed! I'm sticking up for you!
ReplyDeleteThe upstart knitter that entered all your categories was probably "making time" with the judges. (You never know with those farms shows - things can get really ugly.) At least you still have your reputation.
ReplyDeleteHanging around all those farm animals is enough to addle anyone's brains. Scientists still don't know what massive doses of secondhand methane will do to your brain cells. I'm sure those judges weren't "quite right" when they were a-judgin'. At least you've got the yarny goodness to keep you company! I'm going to have to check that stuff out. I've been hearing about it on the intraweb and it makes for some gorgeous socks. Can't wait to see....
ReplyDeleteHey, I just got some of the MadTosh Kale, too! What are you going to do with yours?
ReplyDeleteAnd, because I can't let Nicole best me:
"please please please let me get what I want?"
"disappointed?"
"I know it's gonna happen someday?
"we hate it when our friends become successful?"
"do your best and don't worry?"
"girl least likely to?"
"I'll never be anybody's hero now?"
If there's bitterness or disappointment or resentment or death, the Mozz has a song for it. :)
Well those judges clearly don't know what they're doing. My LYS owner was telling me today about the county fair judge who didn't know the difference between knit and crochet.
ReplyDeletebut you did win - you beat out everyone else who had entered - you were recognized and you did well - be proud that you placed at all - how sad to go to the fair and not see any ribbons on your entries... and you got not one, but TWO ribbons - recognition that your entries were superior to others... you are good. and next year, I am sure you'll enter again - at least I hope so... :)
ReplyDeleteI am kicking myself for not ordering some Madelinetosh from Yarn4socks when I saw it - I didn't get it - I am not letting that opportinuty pass me by again:) Thanks for the heads up. Your yarn is awe-some and cannot wait to see the Twisted Flower knit up - it is an amazing pattern.
ReplyDeleteHELLOO!!!! of course it was whiteribbonstupidthird for knitting beyond the pale... the judges WERE the nutty Intelligent Design people who get on school boards in order to change the whole curriculum
ReplyDeleteNever mind - we all know who the REAL winner is... :)
ReplyDeleteYou were robbed! Don't take it to heart--I'm sure the judges were related to the winner or something. But seriously, like I tell my kids, "Sometimes people will like you for reasons that have nothing to do with you. And sometimes, people will dislike you for reasons that have nothing to do with you." Holds true for knitting, too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful yarn though.
That truly sucks about the farm show this year. I think the "We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful" song pretty much sums it up. :)
ReplyDeleteThose skeins of MadelineTosh are yummy, I've definitely put some of that on my Gotta Have It list.
I agree with Nora. And besides, what better excuse to buy some pretty, squishy new yarn! Nothing soothes the soul like some stash enhancement. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh dear... well you knew the fix was in from the get go. you could always roll naked in yarn until the bitterness subsides.
ReplyDeletePeuh. I bet those first and second prizes don't even know about Antonin Arthaud - let alone the judges.
ReplyDeleteNever mind and let them play around with pumpkins. Keep up the knitting-with-a-spirit ;-)
That Kale is sooo beautiful. It gives me some dyeing urges...
We all think you should have one first place and taken home blue ribbons!! But I think third place is great, too.
ReplyDeleteYou were clearly robbed! But congratulations for even entering! Love the Shedir especially.
ReplyDeleteScrew them! Whatever indeed. It's unfortunate that the judges didn't know that like a million and four angry internet knitters got your back.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of "Unhappy Birthday" for life's bitter moments. What's not to love with lyrics like:
ReplyDelete"I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday because you're evil and you lie."
The birthday part is irrelevant.
3rd place? whatever. Shoulda.been.first!
ReplyDeleteNow, please excuse me. Must order some Madeline Tosh in Kale. Wouldn't that be perfect for a sweater or something for Kailey?
They obviously are misguided!!! Don't worry about it too much. Those other yarns are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI *nearly* did the twisted flower for SSL, I'm dying to try that pattern. Glad you changed yarns, it will really make a difference. Sorry about the contest.
ReplyDeleteNow's the time for one of my favorite sayings:
ReplyDelete"Rejection only matters in organ transplants."
Hee. Makes me giggle every time. Your stuff is gorgeous! And you know you should have won. :)
your knitting is so far out of their league! they clearly had NO IDEA what they were looking at!!!
ReplyDeletewe all know who the real winner is!! :)
Boo to the haters!!! Boo!
ReplyDeleteYarn can solve all of the world's problems, though. Farm show related or not.
Well, it's like people today thinking that classical music sucks because they're spoonfed all the pop crap. I often think that folks no longer know a good thing when they see it. Don't let other people's lack of taste get you down :)
ReplyDeleteI covet the green yarn.
The blue ribbon sweater (fairile) was beatuiful the colors were to die for. Sorry you placed third but everyone can't a winner. I don't have courage to even enter anything of mine. There is always next year....
ReplyDeleteWhat?? You've been robbed! It's a conspiracy, I tell you. You go back to those bastards and you demand a recount.
ReplyDeleteOr you could just gaze placidly at your pretty yarn and breathe deeply. Less exciting but probably better for your blood pressure.
you totally crack me up.
ReplyDeleteTHIRD???? Clearly those judges need a good eye exam. Aaahh, Morrissey . . . brings me back to my college days. :)
ReplyDeleteHumphf! Third—no way.
ReplyDeleteStill that yarn is a great consolation.
Third place? I was cheering you on! You still did good!
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking about that wollmeise:)
Honey, your Shedir kicks the butt of all those other entries. And that BSJ was the bizomb. ROBBED!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey there! I don't know if you do these, but I'm tagging you for an "8 Random Things" meme :) You can find the rules and my own answers on my blog. Hope you'll play along, but no worries if you don't want to :)
ReplyDeletewhat do those judges know anyway? i swear half of it's popularity contest. get in there and become a judge! :-D
ReplyDeletePearls before swine.
ReplyDeleteAlso, should the kale not get along with your other pet skeins, I know a good home willing to take it in.
