September Cast-On Mania

If August was Take-Those-UFOS-and-Make-Them-Your-B*tch month, apparently September is Maniacally-Cast-On-Everything-in-Sight month. Yes, the major gains that I made in reducing the obscene amount of WIPS last month have been wiped out by the amount of new projects I now have on the go. Who knew that knitting and the financial markets would so closely mirror one another? Well, you're not going to finish anything if you don't cast on, right? Let's take a look at our new contestants in September Cast-On Mania, shall we? Beginning of Cobblestone sweater from Fall IK Cobblestone Sweater This is the ultimate auto-pilot knit. I will log some major hours with this while screening films for my class. At first the Classic Elite Skye Tweed felt, as dear Babs put it, chalky, but once you start knitting it, the fabric softens quite a bit. The pattern is amazing and I am loving it. Beginning of Silver Belle from Fall VK VK Silver Belle All I need is to see a KAL set up for a project and I am immediately in. You'll help me and hold my hand? Okay. I can copy off my lab partner? Count me in. Actually I got some super helpful advice from Kim at Chronic Ennui, and now I am rolling along with this project. I was intially daunted by having to cast-on 480 stitches for this, but I decided to move up to an aran weight and size 9 needle, so I am doing the smallest size, despite the fact that I am in no way, as one person on Ravelry put it, a member of the Itty-Bitty-Tittie-Committee. Because of the extreme chart action, this is high cognitive-load knitting, so I envision this being worked on without the disractions of tv, the DRMC and the junior units and their incessant demands for clean clothes, three squares meals a day and my attention. You can get the pattern here for free. Brooks Farm Duet Clapotis It was only a matter of time, people. I mean, I've done the Jaywalkers, the Monkeys, and the Ball-Band Dishcloths, so only a few obligatory patterns remain. I'm breaking out the Brooks Farm Duet that I got at MD S & W last year, and Babs has promised to do this with me.Clapotis in Brooks Farm Duet

  • Mirepoix Bodice
I am still waiting on the yarn for this one: Louet Gems, one of my all-time faves. This sweater is appealing for so many reasons. I love being able to do a pattern out of the exact yarn the pattern is written for, the fair isle action on the bodice is just the right amount for my tastes, and the colors are stupendous. PLUS there is a kal, which always sweetens the deal with added enticement. I won't be starting this one until October, so hopefully I'll be casting on for this in a month or so with a clear conscience. This is far and away the Fall 07 Knit that I am the most excited about! What fall project are you most excited about??

I'm so glad that casting on like mad is going around - part of that A.D.D huh? :) I am casting on several things this week and after seeing some finished Clapotis - I admit I am going to have the finish the one I've started. I'm most excited about casting on my candle flame shawl though with some gorgeous wollmeise laceweight.:)

Oh man, and to think I feel guilty for casting on a pair of socks for the boy. I want to do clapotis too. I cast on/immediately frogged and put it on hold and now I have new yarn in a more me-ish (that is to say green) colour. May be we can ALL hold hands.

See that is what UFO August is all about - guilt free gluttony in September! Yay for casting on new projects. Excellent choices too. Now if only you hadn't told me about that Silver Belle KAL ...

Such good stuff you've got going! I've wanted to use the Duet for a while -- can't wait to see how yours knits up. I'm (shhhh -- I'm still not positive) thinking of doing the Northern Lights Jacket from IK Fall 06. And the peacock feathers shawl is pretty sweet.

Oh no, first Kim with her gorgeous belle, and now you! Loving how it looks so far. And Cobblestone is de rigueur for September, so how could you resist, right? My fall fix is definitely the fair-isle-fest that is Alice Starmore's Oregon vest. I'm totally addicted.

Mmmmm, cast-on mania. I feel you, dude. I feel you. Luckily I love the socks I just cast on for enough to tide me over for a little while, I think.

    Karen said...

Well, see, clearly you HAD to cast on for all of those. They have very different functions. The Mindless project, the I Need Silence project, the Everyone Else Knit It so I Must Too project, and the So Pretty I Can't Resist project. You need them all!!

When you ask what fall project I'm most excited about - am I choosing from my projects or yours?? I can't wait to see your Mirepoix. For my own, I'm thrilled with my Casino Shawl so far, even if it does take every ounce of energy I have.

I'm so loving the cobblestones, but, alas my guy doesn't wear sweaters.

Thanks for the mention--too bad I messed up my own VK SB. I'm still moving forward with it on the advice of those I trust.

There's nothing like Ravelry to shame you into finishing WIP's. I hate seeing those unfinished blocks mocking me, asking me my percentage completed. Oh, the pressure!

I am dizzy. I am living vicariously through you. Maybe when the kids go to college I can do the dish cloths.

    Rachel said...

Ooh, I've been wanting to make the cobblestone sweater too. I just can't decide which yarn to use.
I love your shetland triangle. I think I might be a member of the WWJD club too.

Silver Belle? I love Silver Belle! Whee, that is a load of projects. And junior units, hehe, I might have to steal that one - I have a couple o' tweens myself and it is oh-so-appropriate.

All of those seem perfectly reasonable--even necessary--to me. I have a whole list of fall knitting I want to do, but first up will be the Dickinson Pullover from the Fall 2007 IK. What can I say? I'm a sucker for big, squishy cable knits.

I'm trying so hard to stay faithful to my current knitting but you are certainly making it a lot harder. Flashing those newly cast-on beauties.. *grumple*

Are you sure that's all your going to cast on for? Where's the lace project? Where's the sock project? ;-)

You're definitely going to be kept very busy with all your new projects!

    Anonymous said...

    Yeah! Where's the sock???

I am probably going to cast on the Cobblestone sweater sometime in the next few months. I feel I need to finish the husband's other sweater first.

I'm liking that Mirepoix too, and it's a bit less committing than the Road to Golden from the new KnitScene. I'd make it in the colors shown as well.

I'm not sure what I'm looking forward to most this Fall. Maybe.. some stranded socks for ME!!

I need to get off your site fast - I'm trying very fast not to cast on anything new. I'm still in the "finish what I started" August mode. And you are tempting me.....enjoy the new projects!

I'm having the same sort of startitis. I've been working on the same two socks for the past two weeks and a French Market Bag for much longer than that. Last night I cast on for the Central Park Hoodie, and I'm dying to cast on for a Seamless Hybrid for my husband (to be a holiday present). I can't seem to finish anything lately, only start things!

    Lolly said...

Yeah, I definitely caught that bug! my mind is swirling with projects, and I cannot wait to get home (not at work!) and look in my stash - I have seen some patterns that I can't wait to cast on for! Cobblestone just joined the ranks, as well as a cardigan... and then of course, all of the other goodies I had in my queue! Fall is such an exciting time for a knitter :)

    Veronique said...

I think your cast-on-itis is very wise: if one project bores you, you can simply move on to another one, until the first one seems exciting again! And you've picked such good, solid projects :)

    Risa said...

Oh, I know the feeling! I'm trying to hold out and finish something (anything!) before I cast on for the Tangled Yoke cardigan.
Ack! The yarn, it stares at me...

    Anonymous said...

Oh my! I'm on the same cast-on schedule, and it seems we have verrry similar taste--I also love the DB pattern and Mirepoix. I think I'm sticking to simpler and/or smaller for now, though, if only because I am consumed with that Fall-is-coming, I want to make EVERYTHING sensation.

    Anonymous said...

Love the color of your cobblestone! I'm in a weird place where I don't know what to cast on for yet. I've got post-cobblestone depression so I'm doing my usual standby - socks.

    Anonymous said...

Everything has an equal and opposite reaction, doesn't it? You spent a month finishing things, so you are compelled to spend a month starting things! There's no sense in resisting. And why should you? The projects you've chosen are wonderful.

Ha! we have such similiar taste!
i am working on the silver belle, have two of the cobblestone up next(for the boys)a vest for libby, and all sorts of socks and hats....honestly, should any of us sleep?

I want to make Mirepoix so badly! Actually, there was a similar sweater in VK a few issues ago that I might prefer to make. Or just do both!

I am not excited about any of my projects. They have languished on the needles for so long, and I have so little time for them, and I so badly want and need for them to be done that it's just entered the No Fun territory. I can't cast on anything new, either, because I need to finish the stuff I've started. But there are lots and lots of things I want to make from the fall lineups, both from VK and IK, and from the books I just got...

Damn! That sounds like me! I just realized it's only 4 months till the holidays and I stash dived and cast on so many things!

    Color me crazy!

you are so right on. i have the week off before moving to durham and i have cast on 4 projects!!!! what is wrong with me?

oohhh! the colorway you are using for your clapotis is lovely! clapotis has been on-my-must knit list for a while now.
Once its not 200million degree's here I'm casting on a sweater baby!

    *Love* Silver Belle.

I have the cast-on disease too. Mirepoix Bodice! I love! I want to cast on right now, but I'm sure I don't have yarn for it in my stash. And I really cannot buy more yarn! Waaah! Will enjoy watching yours come together, though.

Well, this morning it's the new Zephyr Style pattern, Juliet. Because it's not even in my queue and wasn't on the radar and just popped up everywhere and I am a sheep. But it's bulky yarn. And that, my friend, is KEY these days.

    Suburban prep said...

Right now I think I have about 10-11 WIP. I have to finish this before I start one more thing because if I don't then I won't have the right needles I need for new projects.

    Robin said...

My drug of choice these days is Juliet! Just finished the first lace repeat. I agree about casting on everything in sight lately!

    Zarzuela said...

They are all so very pretty! It's been everything I can do to keep from casting on a million things myself. Instead, they keep floating around in my head. Maybe I *should* cast on...

I'm still waiting for my Cobblestone yarn from Webs. Wow, the Silver Bell is pretty!!!

No kidding about the fall cast on madness. I'm going insane with the number of WIPs I've got going. Sheesh!

TOTALLy feeling you on this one. I was doing so well with the idea of finishing my CPH--I mean, GEEZ, I only have the button band to do!! Yet, yet... I've just cast on another sweater and I am waiting on the pattern books for 2 more that I have the yarn for. Plus, now that my stipend checks are rolling in again, I want the yarn for 3 more sweaters. Um, yeah. Maniacal, anyone?

Wow, that's quite a list, lady! I have to agree with your comments on the Skye Tweed. I'm working on a Sunrise Circle jacket with that same color of ST. I'm sure I'll offend the knitting gods (or Jared of 'tweed) when I say it but, man, ST squeaks like acrylic!!! I'm also using wooden needles so that's part of the problem.

Good luck with your list of projects!!!!! Can't wait to see what you come up with for your single sock!

    schrodinger said...

I'm the same way right now, and I really can't wait to cast on for auburn mist, but must finish the gazillion other things on my needles.

All of your projects are inspiring me. Do not be afraid to cast on more WIP. They inspire many knitters. I think I want to knit my first sweater. I have all the yarn and two patterns to choose from. I guess I just need to be brave.

    Sonya said...

Well is you're going to cast on lots of projects at least they are gorgeous. I love the colorway of your Skye Tweed. I was going to start Everyday Cardigan with some stash yarns, but now I think I needs me some Tweed!

    Janet said...

This was bound to happen after the recent WIP reduction, but I'm feeling the fall cast-on mania too!

I like Silver Belle, quite a bit, and and a bit irked to find that despite a somewhat massive stash of Cashmerino, I am sadly shy of having enough of any one color to do that one as a stash-buster. It might be for the best since those charts look like they might fry my brain.

You're right: Clapotis is inevitable. I find that there is usually a reason the the whole online knitting community becomes fixated with a pattern! Besides, everyone needs some simple in-front-of-the-tv knitting! I can't wait for it to cool down enough in PA for me to bust my own prized Clap out!
